What's Melamine Resin?

Melamine formaldehyde resin is a polymer obtained by the reaction of melamine and formaldehyde. It is also called melamine formaldehyde resin or melamine resin. Its English abbreviation is MF. During the processing and molding, a cross-linking reaction occurs, and the product is an infusible thermosetting resin. It is usually collectively referred to as amino resin with urea-formaldehyde resin.

1.Physical properties:

The cured melamine formaldehyde resin is colorless and transparent, stable in boiling water, and can even be used at 150°C. It has self-extinguishing properties, arc resistance, and good mechanical properties. Melamine resin is the abbreviation.

2.Chemical properties:

The raw materials are melamine formaldehyde and 37% formaldehyde aqueous solution. The molar ratio of formaldehyde to melamine is 2 to 3. The first step generates different numbers of N-hydroxymethyl substituents, which are then further condensed into linear resins.Different reaction conditions will result in different product molecular weights, ranging from water-soluble to insoluble in water, or even insoluble and infusible solids. The pH value has a great influence on the reaction rate. The resin solution obtained by the above reaction is not suitable for storage. In industry, spray drying is often used to make it into powdered solid. Melamine resin does not cure at room temperature. It is generally cured at 130-150°C. Adding a small amount of acid catalyst can increase the curing speed.

3.Material properties:

It has high chemical activity, high bonding strength, high water resistance and can withstand more than three hours of boiling water, high thermal stability, strong low temperature curing ability, good wear resistance, fast curing, and no need to add curing agent.

Melamine finished products have better hardness and wear resistance than urea-formaldehyde resin finished products, better resistance to chemicals, and better electrical insulation properties. However, the glue layer is prone to cracking after curing, so it is not suitable to use modified melamine resin glue alone.

The storage period is short and it is easy to deteriorate. It can be made into powder to extend the storage period. The price of modified melamine resin is relatively high. It is used to make plastic veneer and is widely used in melamine tableware, furniture, vehicle construction, etc.
